What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is a measure of how often and how prominently a brand appears in answers generated by AI search engines and assistants, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. It is expressed as the share of relevant prompts on which the brand is mentioned in the answer text or cited as a source.

It differs from search ranking in a structural way. A ranking is a position in a list, so being fourth still means being present. An AI answer is a single synthesised response assembled from a few retrieved sources, so there is no fourth place — a brand is either in the answer or it is not.

This matters because a growing share of buyers now get their shortlist from an AI answer rather than a results page. A brand can hold every one of its Google rankings and still be missing from the answers where the shortlist is actually formed.

How AI visibility is measured

Three rates do most of the work. Each is calculated over a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts, run repeatedly because individual answers vary.

Mention rate

How often your brand name appears in the answer text. The clearest read on whether you are part of the conversation at all.

prompts naming you
÷ total prompts

Citation rate

How often your domain is listed as a source. Distinct from being mentioned — you can be named without a link, or cited without being named.

prompts citing your domain
÷ total prompts

Share of voice

Your mention rate relative to the competitors appearing on the same prompts. Tells you whether a low rate is your problem or the category's.

your mentions
÷ all brand mentions

Reading the result: four visibility zones

Rates alone do not tell you what to do. BlueJar sorts every persona-and-engine combination into one of four zones, because each one calls for different work.

Owned

Mentioned and cited consistently. Defend it — monitor for drops and keep the cited pages current.

Cited

Your page is used as a source but your brand is not named in the answer. Fix the framing so attribution follows the citation.

Partial

You appear on some prompts and phrasings but not others. Usually a coverage and citability gap, and the fastest zone to improve.

Lost

Competitors are named and you are absent. Almost always a third-party source problem rather than an on-page one.

AI visibility vs. SEO rankings

Related, and driven by overlapping signals, but they are not the same measurement and they fail independently.

  SEO ranking AI visibility
Outcome A position in a ranked list Present in the answer, or absent from it
Partial credit Yes — page 1 position 8 still earns clicks No — there is no position 8 in a generated answer
Measured against Keywords Prompts and questions, across intent stages
Result consistency Broadly stable between checks Varies by session and model, so it must be sampled
Dominant lever Relevance, links, technical health Entity clarity, citability, and third-party mentions
How you lose it A competitor outranks you A model update or a rewritten source drops you out

How to improve AI visibility

Ordered roughly by how quickly each one shows up in answers.

Make your entity unambiguous Fast

Engines need to resolve who you are before they can recommend you. That means complete Organization schema, one canonical page that states plainly what the company does, and consistent naming, description, and founding details everywhere they appear. Ambiguity is a common and quietly fatal cause of absence.

Answer questions directly on the page Fast

Retrieval works at passage level, not page level. Content that states a claim in a self-contained paragraph directly under the question it answers is far easier to lift into an answer than the same information spread across several sections of narrative.

Add the structured data that describes your content Fast

Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Product, and Organization markup tell a model what it is looking at instead of making it infer. This does not force a citation, but it removes the ambiguity that causes engines to skip a page.

Make sure AI crawlers can reach you Fast

Check that GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and the other AI user agents are not blocked in robots.txt or at the CDN, and that your key content does not require JavaScript to render. Blocking retrieval is the one mistake that makes every other fix irrelevant.

Earn mentions in the sources engines actually cite Slow

This is usually the biggest lever and the slowest one. Category roundups, review platforms, community discussion, and editorial coverage are what engines retrieve when they answer "best X" questions. If competitors appear there and you do not, no amount of on-page work closes the gap.

Correct what the web already says about you Slow

Engines repeat stale pricing, retired product names, and outdated positioning with complete confidence. Finding the cited sources carrying the wrong information and getting them updated is unglamorous and disproportionately effective.

What the free checker measures

Enter your domain and BlueJar runs a full GEO audit on it. You get your visibility across all four engines, the Visibility Matrix showing which zones you hold, the sources being cited in your category, and a prioritised fix plan with effort and expected lift attached to each item.

Two honest caveats. First, AI answers vary between sessions, so a single audit is a baseline rather than a permanent number — tracking it over time is what makes it actionable, which is covered on the AI search monitoring page. Second, the fastest fixes are on-page and will show up within weeks, while the highest-impact ones depend on third-party sources and take longer, because you are waiting on someone else to publish.

AI visibility FAQs

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no universal benchmark, because mention rates depend heavily on how competitive and how well-documented your category is. The useful comparison is relative: your share of voice against the competitors appearing on your prompts, and your own rate over time. A 20% mention rate can be category-leading in a crowded market and poor in a niche one, so treat the competitive figure as the real score.

Why is my brand not showing up in AI search?

The common causes, in rough order of frequency: your brand is thinly represented in the third-party sources engines retrieve from; your entity information is ambiguous or inconsistent, so the model cannot confidently resolve who you are; your content answers topics rather than questions, making it hard to lift a passage from; or AI crawlers are blocked or your content requires JavaScript to render. A young domain also simply has less presence in both training data and retrievable sources.

How is AI visibility different from AI Overviews visibility?

AI Overviews visibility is one component of it — specifically, appearing in Google's AI-generated summaries on the results page. AI visibility is the broader measure across assistants and answer engines, which includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. Because these systems retrieve differently, strong AI Overviews presence does not reliably predict presence in ChatGPT.

Can I check AI visibility for free?

Yes. Enter your domain in the checker at the top of this page to run a free GEO audit with no credit card required. You can also spot-check manually by asking each engine a handful of category questions, though that is a smoke test rather than a measurement — answers vary between sessions, so meaningful rates need many prompts run repeatedly.

How long does it take to improve AI visibility?

On-page work — schema, entity clarity, question-led content, crawler access — tends to show up as engines re-crawl, typically days for Perplexity and weeks for ChatGPT. Gains that require third-party sources take months, since they depend on someone else publishing. ChatGPT is the slowest to reflect change because part of its knowledge comes from training rather than live retrieval.

Does AI visibility drive actual traffic?

Some, but treating it purely as a traffic channel understates it. Many AI answers resolve the question without a click, so the value is being in the shortlist a buyer takes into their next step, whether or not they visit first. Referral traffic from AI engines is worth tracking in analytics, but mention and citation rates are the more honest measure of whether you are present in the decision.

Which AI engines should I be measuring?

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot cover the great majority of assistant usage, and each retrieves differently enough that they need separate measurement. Averaging them into one score hides the pattern that matters most — being strong on one engine and absent from another is extremely common, and the fix differs by engine.
