Perplexity Visibility Tracker
Track every Perplexity answer that cites you — and every one that cites a competitor instead
Perplexity shows its sources on almost every answer. That makes it the one engine where visibility is directly observable, and the fastest place to prove a fix worked.

What is a Perplexity visibility tracker?
A Perplexity visibility tracker is a tool that monitors how often Perplexity cites your domain and names your brand when it answers questions in your category. It runs a fixed set of buyer-intent prompts, captures each answer along with the full list of sources Perplexity displayed, and reports your citation rate, your share of the cited sources, and which competitors and third-party pages appeared in your place.
Perplexity is the most measurable of the AI engines, because it attributes openly. Where ChatGPT often names a brand with no link, Perplexity lists the sources it used directly beneath the answer — so tracking it is less inference and more observation.
That transparency has a strategic consequence. Perplexity draws on many sources per answer rather than a single best result, so you do not need to be the top-ranked page to be included. Being one credible source among many is a realistic target, which makes Perplexity the engine where most brands see movement first.
Two ways to be visible in Perplexity
Most tools report only the first one. Missing the second hides a large share of your real presence.
Perplexity links your domain
Your page appears in the numbered source list under the answer. This is direct, attributable visibility, and it can send referral traffic.
It is won with page-level work: content that answers the question in a liftable passage, clean structured data, freshness, and crawler access.
Looks like: "…according to [4]" where source 4 is yourdomain.comYour brand is named via someone else
Perplexity recommends you in the answer text, but the citation points at a review site, roundup, or forum thread that mentioned you — not at your own site.
It is won off-site, by earning presence in the sources Perplexity retrieves from. This is usually where the larger opportunity sits.
Looks like: "Top options include YourBrand [2]" where source 2 is a third-party roundupWhat gets tracked
Perplexity-specific metrics, sampled across your prompt set rather than read off a single answer.
Citation rate
The share of tracked prompts where your domain appears in Perplexity's source list. The headline metric on this engine.
Mention rate
How often your brand is named in the answer text, whether or not your own domain was the source behind it.
Source position
Where you sit in the cited list. Earlier sources carry more of the answer's substance and attract more of the clicks.
Share of citations
Your citations as a proportion of all sources cited on your prompts — the fairest read on an engine that cites many sources per answer.
The competing source set
Every domain Perplexity cited instead of you, which doubles as a ranked outreach list.
Which page got cited
Perplexity often cites a different page than the one you optimised. Knowing which URL it actually picked changes what you work on.
Why Perplexity behaves differently from ChatGPT
The same visibility problem has different causes and different fixes on each engine. This is what makes Perplexity its own tracking surface.
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Where answers come from | Live web retrieval on essentially every query | Trained knowledge, with retrieval added selectively |
| Sources per answer | Many — being one of a set is achievable | Few, and often none shown at all |
| Attribution | Visible and numbered under the answer | Frequently names brands with no link |
| Freshness weighting | High — recent content competes well | Lower; established authority carries further |
| Time for a fix to show | Days | Weeks, and some gains wait on a training refresh |
| Biggest lever | Page-level citability, freshness, indexation | Third-party mentions and entity clarity |
BlueJar's own analysis of citation behaviour across engines found Perplexity citing substantially more sources per answer than ChatGPT with browsing — the detail is in how to rank in Perplexity AI.
What actually moves Perplexity visibility
Because retrieval is live and freshness-weighted, this is the engine where on-page work pays back quickest.
Confirm PerplexityBot is not blocked
Perplexity cannot cite what it cannot fetch. Check robots.txt and any CDN or WAF rules for blocks on PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. This is the single most common reason a well-optimised site earns no citations at all, and it is usually a one-line fix.
Write passages that can be lifted whole
Retrieval operates on passages. A self-contained paragraph that answers a specific question directly under a heading phrased as that question is far more citable than the same fact distributed across three sections of narrative.
Keep the pages you want cited current
Perplexity weights freshness more heavily than the other engines. Pages carrying dates, figures, or comparisons decay quickly, and a genuine update to a page that already gets cited is often the cheapest available win.
Make sure the page is indexed in Bing
Perplexity's retrieval leans on the Bing index. Pages that are absent or stale in Bing Webmaster Tools are effectively invisible here regardless of how they perform in Google, and this is checked far less often than it should be.
Get into the sources that get cited alongside you
For comparison and "best X" prompts, Perplexity leans on roundups and review platforms. Presence there produces implicit citations, which is how you appear in answers where your own pages will never be the natural source.
Perplexity visibility FAQs
How do I check if Perplexity cites my website?
Ask Perplexity a question your content should answer and look at the numbered source list under the response — attribution is visible, so a manual check is genuinely informative here in a way it is not on ChatGPT. For a real measurement you still need a fixed prompt set run repeatedly, since which sources get selected varies between runs. A tracker reports citation rate across the whole set rather than a single observation.
Why does Perplexity cite my competitor instead of me?
Three causes account for most cases. Your page may not be retrievable, because PerplexityBot is blocked or the content needs JavaScript to render. Your content may not contain a liftable passage that answers the question directly. Or the query is a comparison prompt, where Perplexity prefers third-party roundups over any vendor's own site — in which case the fix is getting into those roundups rather than editing your page.
Does being cited by Perplexity send traffic?
Some, and more reliably than most AI engines, because the citations are visible and clickable. Volumes are still modest next to organic search, and the visit quality tends to be high since the user has already read a synthesised answer before clicking. Treat referral traffic as a secondary benefit; citation rate is the metric that reflects whether you are present in the decision.
How quickly do changes show up in Perplexity?
Faster than any other engine — often within days. Because retrieval is live rather than dependent on a training cycle, a new or updated page can start being cited as soon as it is crawled and indexed. This is why Perplexity is the best engine for validating that a fix works before rolling the same approach out more broadly.
Is Perplexity visibility the same as ranking in Bing?
Related but not the same. Perplexity's retrieval draws heavily on the Bing index, so being indexed in Bing is close to a prerequisite. It is not sufficient, though: from the indexed candidates Perplexity selects on passage relevance and freshness, so a page can rank respectably in Bing and still never be chosen as a source.
How many prompts should I track on Perplexity?
Enough to cover the real phrasings across your category and buying stages, which usually means hundreds rather than dozens. Perplexity cites many sources per answer, so citation rates on small prompt sets swing widely between runs. Include comparison prompts specifically — they behave differently from informational ones and are where implicit citations dominate.
